Memes are the nuts and bolts of why you do the things you do. They are the units which make up human culture. But what exactly is culture then?
According to anthropologists, culture is the term used to describe the integrated system of socially acquired values, beliefs, and rules of conduct which delimit the range of accepted behaviors in any given society. It’s important to note that culture isn’t just a trend, it’s something that is passed on to the next generation. Like in 1953 when the Japanese macaque Imo took a sweet potato down to the water and washed it before she ate it. Soon it became a trend among her troop. But it became part of the troops culture when the next generation began washing their sweet potatoes, and it’s been passed on to subsequent generations and continues to this day.
So culture is the whole, and the meme is the unit. The theme of this blog is to identify and explore memes in human culture. Investigating the history behind the meme, and how it fits in to society today given our current frame of reference in “time and space”.
If anybody has good ideas for memes to explore, please send them my way.
